Last weekend, Team City’s Sacha and Amy spent the day with Doorways Derby, in support of our
2022/23 Charity of the Year.

Founded in 2015 by local couple Lisa and Craig Wheatley, Doorways Derby initially set out to support rough sleepers in Derby City Centre but has since grown to regularly support over 120 households through food banks and street kitchens, held every Tuesday and Saturday.

Along with eight regular volunteers, Amy and Sacha spent their afternoon organising donations into food and product categories before handing them out to the vulnerable families and homeless who came along to the session. Amongst the donations were popular items such as pasta, soup, fresh vegetables, and baked beans, as well as pet food, toiletries and flowers, all donated by the public, local stores and FareShare.

The Saturday foodbank attracts hundreds of people every week, and with the current cost of living crisis, the affordability of food is affecting more families than ever.

As Doorways Derby relies heavily on donations from the public and local businesses, City Taxis launched an internal food collection throughout October, which saw many staff members and drivers donate anything they could to the charity.
